This Month's Top Tip... Beware of Unaccredited "Pop-Up" Trainings

Aesthetic Training ScamsHow to Identify and Avoid these Aesthetic training programs…

The vast majority of searches for terms like “Botox Training” and “Dermal Filler Certification” return tons of results that have zero accreditation, meaning that their training certificates are worthless in the eyes of your state licensing board and your liability insurance carrier.  Even the search “AI” summary may contain misinformation from an unaccredited clinic source, especially if they are local to you. The word “certification” does not also legally mean “accreditation” which is necessary.  Accreditation is earned by a training provider and it’s courses being reviewed and offering CME (or interchangeably, CEU) credits accepted by AMA, AANP, ANCC, and AAPA for doctors, NP’s, Nurses, and PA’s respectively.

Scam, unaccredited training programs often share the same criteria.  Avoid any training program that is…

⛔ Single Location or has a physical presence in one state or region.⛔
Is run or taught by a single person.⛔
⛔That person is a Registered Nurse. RN’s cannot design treatment or teach it.⛔
⛔They do not have accreditation accepted by AMA, AANP, ANCC at the least.⛔
⛔Does not state the exact street address or instructor bio.⛔
⛔Does not guarantee the amount of Toxin, Filler you will use for hands-on and include it in your tuition ⛔

Who Owns Your Aesthetic Training and Why Does it Matter?

Most Training Programs are Owned by Non-medical Investors or Private Equity

When you spend your hard earned money on aesthetic training, how much of it goes to pad the pockets of people you never see, meet, or are even capable of teaching you?  You should expect that all of your tuition dollars go toward the quality and accreditation of your training…

Qualified, Licensed, Experienced Faculty
✅Real US-Sourced Botulinum Toxin and Dermal Filler supply for Hands-On
✅Maintenance of CME Accreditation
✅Small Class Sizes

Yet most training programs, including some of the largest are wholly or majority owned by non-medical investors or private equity.  These people do not provide any value to your education and simply siphon off your tuition dollars to pad their pockets and hire the cheapest, inexperienced RN instructors who read off of a script, make you pay additional for hands-on toxin and filler, pack the classes with 10 or more attendees, and pressure you into buying memberships and “advanced” courses.  Before signing up for training, please read our reviews of both medical-owned and non-medical owned training programs.  If you don’t know, do not register until you contact them and find out.  Or simply search LinkedIN for your answer.  It might surprise you.

Why Aesthetic-Training.com?

This site is the work of a group of MD Physician-educators who all run successful practices full-time in addition to teaching aesthetic procedures.  Between us we have treated over 500,000 patient encounters and injected over 5 million units of botulinum toxin .  We have hired and supervised nurses and nurse practitioners, and taught over 1,000 physicians, nurses and nurse practitioners in aesthetic procedures.

The landscape of both the practice of Aesthetic Procedures and the Training in Aesthetic Procedures has changed dramatically for the worse since the pandemic.  We hoped the day would never come that we had to post anything like the “Buyer Beware” content on this site, but here we are.  Aesthetic medicine is not a specialty. There is no Board governing it, and there never will be.  These are skills that must be practiced responsibly and respectfully by any eligible provider who chooses to offer them.

We love to teach and we want to preserve the quality and reputation of the aesthetic procedures that we skillfully enjoy practicing.  However, we cannot teach everyone since we only teach around 150 providers a year.  Nevertheless, we would love to help you get started and not get scammed, even if we never meet in person.  We welcome you to the medical aesthetic community and hope that you take a few minutes to read our unbiased assessment of the industry and how to reach your full potential in this field.

  • How Do I Find the Best Botox Training Course?

Your Training in Botox, Fillers and other Aesthetic Procedures could be the most satisfying and productive career change in your lifetime.  Or it could be a complete waste of time and money.  The most important criteria in choosing the best aesthetic training courses are:

    • Full Accreditation from AMA, AANP, ANCC, AAPA and not just "certification" where you simply receive a piece of paper backed by nothing.  Very few training programs are fully accredited.
    • Small Groups of 6 or fewer attendees per qualified faculty member.
    • Hands-on Using real product.  The course should clearly state how much toxin and filler you get for hands-on included in your tuition price.  Some cheaper courses do not include any product for hands-on and use saline or force you to buy product at the course at inflated pricing.
    • Enduring training materials.  Does the course give materials to prepare for the live date and are these materials also fully accredited?
    • Qualified faculty members, preferably MD's training you.  Dentists have no medical supervision over Nurses, NP's and PA's and cannot legally train you in an accredited setting.  Nurses also cannot train PA's or Doctors in any setting.
  • How Do I Get Started and Learn Aesthetic Procedures?

You need two things before embarking on that exciting career in aesthetic medicine.

    1. LICENSURE:  First you need an active license in your state our country as an RN, NP, PA, MD, DO.  DDS/DMD or ND in some states.  Then you must be fully aware of your scope of practice rules.  This varies from state to state and is dependent on state rules and regulations.  No training program can supercede these rules and regulations.
    2. TRAINING:  Then once you are certain you have met the licensure rules, take an accredited training program which delivers a CME or CEU backed certification, not just a piece of paper.  This can then be used to bind your medical malpractice insurance and if you are in autonomous practice, begin ordering your products.  Taking an unaccredited training will likely lead to roadblocks when applying for insurance or ordering product.
  • Do I Need Memberships or Aesthetic Training Renewals Annually?

    Absolutely Not!

Memberships sold by many training companies are a cash grab scam.  Once you have trained in an accredited training program, you have those CME/CEU credits for life.  Re-training or adding additional training courses is solely up to you.  This type of training never expires.

Moreover, to become successful doing 90% of the most common treatments that 90% of the people want, you should not waste money on "advanced" or "level 2 and level 3" courses which teach fringe applications that few people want and often have poor outcomes that erode your reputation, not enhance it.
