Can You Really Train in Aesthetic Procedures Online?
The short answer is a resounding…. maybe 😁. Online Training can make sense in a few very specific situations.
1. You Have Colleagues or a Supervising MD who is willing to Shadow You or Provide Hands-On.
Some providers need a basic proof of certification in order to be added to the professional liability insurance policy for the practice she will soon be joining. This online training should be CME-Accredited by one of the major governing bodies (see below for more information).
2. You Learned in the past from an Unaccredited Training Program and now need some actual Proof of Training.
Many providers who have been practicing successfully for years learned in an informal preceptorship environment without a rigorous accredited training. Often, these providers need to show proof of formal training later on when changing jobs or changing medical malpractice insurance carriers. In some situations, a state medical or nursing board might ask for a training certificate when performing an audit. In many of these situations, where the provider is already clinically competent, an online training will suffice.
3. You Are Competent at a Procedure but want additional Knowledge to Improve Results.
Sadly many training programs, even accredited ones, fail to provide enough information to help everyone become a completely competent provider in every application of say Botulinum Toxin or Dermal Fillers, or PRP. Instead of traveling to another hands-on training program, providers in this situation can opt to re-train in the aesthetic procedures online.
4, You Want an Exposure to the Technicalities of an Aesthetic Procedure before Traveling and Paying for Hands-On.
This can be a prudent choice for people who are investigating aesthetic medicine as a career change but are still in a salaried position and do not want to commit the time to travel to hands-on yet. Moreover, the presence of an accredited online certificate could serve as an advantage when looking for a job at a facility that does the shadowing and supervised hands-on training in-house. In this situation, ask if you can apply the costs of the online training to the live hands-on training with the same company. This would reduce your costs of hands-on training significantly.
If you are not in one of these 4 situations, you should probably look for the best accredited hands-on training. But now, the best live training courses still use online learning in advance of the live date to give you an important preview of the material so that you show up to the hands-on date fully prepared and ready to take the next step. Not all of them use online training equally and not all are accredited.
Choosing the Right Accredited Online Training Provider
This requires a little digging. Most of the Top 10 results in online search for various aesthetic online training classes are NOT fully CME accredited as a standalone. Here is what you want to see in the online training that you do choose…
- Full CME Accreditation with hours of credit stated and acceptance of credit by AANP , AAPA, and ANCC at a minimum.
- An interface that is interactive with downloadable notes and forms, not just a private Vimeo video of someone talking.
- Ability to print and save the CME Certificate online rather than waiting for the mail.
- Is there live chat or an email contact to ask questions of the faculty?
- Access duration clearly stated before you register.
- Courses must deliver free updates during the time of subscription to keep the material fresh.
- Never a requirement to pay ongoing fees after completing the training for bogus “recertification” or “annual certification”.
- Courses should have live links to the medical literature
- No online training should endorse only one brand, product, or manufacturer. Accredited training always lists multiple options.
- Do not choose a live streaming webinar unless there is a guaranteed recording that you can watch at your leisure.
