Why Train in Sclerotherapy ?

One of the oldest cosmetic procedures dating back hundreds of years when a “slender rod of iron” was used to irritate the lumen of a very large varicose vein.  Modern sclerotherapy depends on considerable injection skill and judgment in patient selection to get great results.  This treatment is only cosmetic when treating flat “spider veins” but never bulging veins of any color known as “varicose veins”.  Varicose veins need to be referred to a full-service vein clinic.

  • Nearly 100 million Americans could benefit from the procedure (spider veins with no varicose veins).
  • Agents used have earned FDA-approval and relatively inexpensive.
  • Supplies are inexpensive.
  • It exceeds expensive lasers in effectiveness, comfort and low complication rate.
  • Transillumination devices have made it easier to find feeder veins and cost around $1,000.
  • Packages should be sold to ensure that patients finish the necessary course of treatments on time for the best results.

The Cons of Sclerotherapy Treatment …
  • Good margins generally capped at 50-55% due to the time involved for each procedure.  Around 30 minutes.
  • You might need to compete with vascular surgery clinics that have their own built-in referral network.
  • A single treatment rarely finishes the job.  Patients need to be committed to multiple treatments.
  • Sun exposure post-procedure can increase complications.  This means treatments are generally avoided during summer and early Fall unless patient commits to not getting any sun on legs.
  • No synergies with other aesthetic injection procedures.
  • Patients who were treated in the past can be difficult due to prior scarring of veins.
  • Consultation with detailed exam for bulging veins is required prior to starting treatment.
  • Results are highly dependent on patients’ compliance wearing compression stockings post-procedure.
  • Complications like staining and matting can take a long time to resolve.
